Saint-Malo,
a historical city

The city of Saint-Malo has a unique history. It has gone through the ages, constantly renewing itself. Its name “Saint-Malo” is explained by the arrival of a Welsh monk named Maclow who called the town Maclou; transformed into Malo, then Saint-Malo. This historic city is also called “La Cité Corsaire”, due to its many corsairs fighting the enemy ships of the King or the Emperor.

From the Porte Saint-Vincent to the Porte Saint-Thomas the walk is splendid. The spire of Saint-Vincent Cathedral dominates the city. The Grand’ Porte with its two towers is remarkable. The top of the Bidouane Tower reveals a fascinating 360° panorama. No less than 4 museums allow you to discover and understand the history of Saint-Malo: the History Museum in the castle, the 39-45 Memorial, the Long-Cours Cap-Hornier Museum and the Jacques Cartier Museum.

Several remarkable sites
also reveal a preserved nature. The cornice of Aleth offers a breathtaking view of the city, the estuary of the Rance, the rock of Grand Bé, the forts of Petit Bé and the island of Cézembre. The Pointe de la Varde, protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral, is a real paradise for walkers. The Parc de la Briantais opens onto the Bay off the coast with the Solidor Tower in the foreground.
